Merry Freakin' Christmas

The above image was cobbled together from various images I found on the internet.  Also I printed it out in black and white and taped it to my door at work.  There's a contest for door decorations.  I bet I win.

Well Crap

Today I got the idea to install Dungeon Siege 2 on my PC.  I was able to play for about 5 minutes before my computer froze.  I restarted it, and thinking I didn't want to play Dungeon Siege that bad started going through the process of uninstalling it.  Then my PC froze again.  Now it can't finish with the boot process without freezing (at one point it pulled up the motherboard logo and froze halfway through so it looked all screwed up).  I can't do anything about it either because "Safe mode" isn't on my list of options when pressing F8 during boot up - evidently it's inaccessible by default now or something extremely retarded about my computer is keeping it from appearing.  Guess it's time to upgrade.  I'd been thinking about doing it for a while (games nowadays seem to want to be all choppy and crap anyway).  My only regret is not backing up certain files.  They are files I can live without and the really important files are safe and sound on an external hard drive, but I got a crap-ton of bookmarks to websites I like to keep up with and now, blargh.  something in my computer's insides have made them completely inaccessible.

Crap crap crap.

Crap.

Delays can only mean 1 thing

I am lazy.

But enough about that.

I recently started going outside again.  It's been a while, and at first it was kind of weird going out and doing stuff by myself, but I got tired of the people I know saying I have strange taste in movies.  So one day a few weeks ago I went out and saw shutter.  It was kind of creepy, but not a whole lot.  It was my kind of movie though.  And then last weekend I saw The Forbidden Kingdom.  Jackie Chan AND Jet Li.  They kicked and punched the crap out of everything and it was awesome.  At some point I think I am going to have to see Zombie Strippers.

I can't say that title without giggling.

On the "Gabe is boring" front, I have been reading up about python in games, and getting generally frustrated with it because while it appears that a majority of the games that do use python use it one way, I have everyone that uses python telling me to do it another way or they will point and laugh at me.

Yeah.  Okay.  Fine.  Whatever.  I am one of a billion wannabes out there  that want nothing more than to make games.  I try to be realistic about it.  Games are very complicated bits of software.  It's not like writing an online store (which I have done a few times at my current job).  There's graphics (my main obsession), physics, audio, networking (if you're in to that sort of thing), design elements, blah, blah blah, blah blah.  Games are fucking huge when you start from scratch.

But I have ideas bursting out of my ears in a bloody mess and then my brain starts moving a mile a minute to figure out possible solutions - How would I program it to do this or that?  How do other people do it?  I'll open up a piece of open source code and make my eyes water and forget about it, or do what I did while I was in college and buy a book about programming in games, only to stop reading it halfway through to play whatever new came out on the PS2/Wii/Xbox360/PC.

I'm determined now though.  Some of these free games like Eternal Daughter and Cave Story fucking inspire me

goddammit dog dont pee there

My brother recently got a puppy.  We think it is a beagle/chihuahua mix, and was, up until last weekend, the complete bane of my weekends.

I like to be left alone most of the day on weekends.  When I am alone, people aren't asking me to do things (evidently I am awesome at things so people ask me to do those things for them).  When I have to watch someone else's dog to make sure it doesn't crap all over the house I get a little pissed if they don't consult with me first.

so, of course, I came home from work the day after the dog joined us, and there was a note on the door;

"Take Maggie Out"

I went into my brother's room and there she was, looking up at me from the crate he kept her in while he was at work (she now has his entire bathroom at her disposal when she is alone).   I had been under the impression that she would be kept at my brother's girlfriend's house, but her mother had issues with that (funny really.  she thought it was a trick to get her to let his girlfriend keep the dog), and so I was stuck with a dog I really didn't want to deal with when my brother was not home (and he works 6 days a week).

Sure.  I love dogs.  I love trained dogs.  Dogs that walk up in front of you and try to take a crap in the middle of your room while you're building a shelf make me want to drop-kick them (this did happen -not the drop kicking part.  the attempt at crapping in my room part- and there is now a no-dog policy in my room) and scream a lot about how bad the dog is.

That is why i had to make the decision to completely wash my hands of responsibility.  I spoke to my parents and they agreed that before I kill my brother's dog with intense beams of hate radiating out of my eyes I should let him know to take the dog to my parent's house on the weekends so I don't have to deal with it.

Call me mean, but I don't want that responsibility right now.  Especially since it's not my dog.

I'm Old!

January 10th, 2008 @ 10:48 am 2 comments

Last Monday was my 28th Birthday, and the following day was the second birthday of this website.  I don't particularly know why I waited this long to say anything about it, but eh.  Oh well.  Happy Birthday to us.

I got a new robot for my birthday thanks to Chris and Sarah.  A little green 'beetle' robot that walks while wagging its head back and forth .  Tamiya is possibly the best company ever because of the fact that they make little robot kits that cost less than 20 bucks.  The box claimed that it was an 'obstacle avoiding type', but so far it's just knocked everything out of its way with its head, which is equally as awesome because robots of the future (all hail our metal overlords!) should be as destructive as possible to demonstrate their superiority over human-kind.

I had planned on getting the gallery working by the day of my birthday, but I got distracted and started tinkering with Last.Fm XML feeds (coming to the crap section soon).

My friends know that I like to tinker, but I have a habit of seeing something shiney and leaving whatever i was messing with an incomplete shambling mess that can only pathetically reach up and moan "faaaather...  whyyyy don't you loooove meeeeee", but I am really happy with what I've done with this new 'crap' section on my website.  It's already taken up a lot of my time because I've noticed bugs here and there (which is often the case with me because I do a lot of work while watching bad horror movies), such as the fact that I hadn't bothered to position or display the off-hand weapon/shield in the dungeon runners page.  Additionally I've noticed that a lot of images are just broken, but evidently that is the fault of the Dungeon Runners development team (there's an inconsistency between the upper/lower case-ness of the names of images and the case of names of the image-name strings that appear in the xml).  Kind of annoying and I am halfway tempted to just go through all the images and make all their names lower-cased so I can kick the issue in the balls myself without having to wait on a fix to the XML.  Unfortunately we're talking 957 files, and while I'm sure I can do something about it with Automator in Mac OS X, I'm not really sure how to at this point.

Fun.
